Bio
Virgil Marti uses dated conventions to make site-specific installations. He is interested in the relationships between art and interior decoration, "good" and "bad" taste, desire and sublimation, class and taste. Recognizing the roles personal experience and acculturation have played in the development of his tastes, and the explicit handling of personal content in his work has led Marti to create the intimate installations and twisted versions of wallpaper designs that he grew up with in Middle America. Marti has received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant; a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship; a Pew Fellowship in the Arts; and an Art Matters Fellowship. His work has been exhibited in the Institute of Contemporary Art/University of Pennsylvania (PA;) Santa Monica Museum of Art (CA;) Thread Waxing Space, White Columns, and the Whitney Biennial 2004 (New York.)
