Philagrafika 2010 - Frequently Asked Questions
Philagrafika 2010 is an inaugural contemporarty art festival that will incorporate multiple projects with partnering institutions. It is currently very much a work in progress.
The coming year is a planning time for the organization and as we build this international event
we welcome your questions.
Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious is the thematic exhibition that will establish a framework for the larger
event, Philagrafika 2010. This five-sited exhibition will take place across the following institutions: Moore College of Art and Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the
Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Print Center and Temple Gallery, Tyler School of Art, Temple University.
Below are answers to frequently asked questions about the event as a whole. Click on a question to view an answer, or to hide one.
• Who can be involved in Philagrafika 2010?
It will involve a variety of partners, including: arts organizations, museums,
colleges and universities, galleries, web-based entities, artist collectives,
print shops and other professional organizations.
• What does it mean to be a Philagrafika 2010 program partner?
Program partners are those organizations that choose to develop and/or host programs
that respond to the thematic framework of Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious
and are scheduled either as a prelude to the festival or during its run, January through April 2010.
• Can we work collaboratively with other organizations to develop a programmatic
response
to Philagrafika 2010?
Yes. And we encourage prospective partners to think about natural affiliations
to maximize the benefit of the event to the organization – mission, discipline,
geography, shared space, and existing collaborative programs. For instance, a special
collection without traditional exhibition space, curator or preparator may want to work
with an artist to develop a special project and could contribute toward developing
educational materials.
• What kind of programming can be part of Philagrafika 2010?
While we expect that exhibitions and the programming around them will be the single
largest category of programming, Philagrafika 2010 welcomes the development of a variety
of offerings. Depending upon the mission and program goals of our partners, we hope
that partners will do what they do best, i.e. classes, panel discussions, workshops,
performances, site specific installations, public art projects, or publications.
• Do exhibitions have to run for the entire four month period?
No. We understand that organizations must develop programs in the context of their
own calendars. There will be peak visitorship during the four month run of The Graphic
Unconcsious and we hope to coordinate with you to take advantage of these audiences.
• How far does Philagrafika 2010 extend? Is it just a citywide event?
We welcome participation by regional organizations. Geographic proximity to the
city does facilitate our ability to both market and coordinate transportation between
and among sites. All participating organizations will be included in marketing initiatives
and we are considering transportation as part of the overall festival planning.
• Who is going to come to Philagrafika 2010?
We are working on building audiences through professional art affiliations. For example
the Southern Graphics Council Conference is scheduled in Philadelphia March 25-28, 2010
with an expected attendance of 2,000. We also expect to welcome group tours from Art Table
and College Art Association, as well as cultural tourism on a regional, national and international
level. Additional initiatives are being explored for building audiences related to print in the fields of medical,
humanities and law.
• What does Philagrafika expect of us if we sign on as program partners?
Organizations should have programming defined by fall of 2008, with the understanding that they are responsible
for raising money for their respective projects. Philagrafika recognizes that implementation is subject to
funding. Philagrafika will need a letter of commitment from institutions. Each institution will be required
to meet deadlines for inclusion in publications and marketing materials. In addition, in order for us to market
the festival we need a very modest investment from our partners through membership contribution.
The goal is to have all participating partners confirmed by the fall of 2008 to coincide with branding
for Philagrafika 2010. Since 2007, Philagrafika has been marketing this project through national and
international presentations to professional organizations and we have been improving and adding to the
organization’s website, www.philagrafika.org.
• How can individual artists get involved?
The Graphic Unconscious is a curated international exhibition. The curatorial team is considering
Philadelphia artists whose work fits within the themes. If you send materials to the office we have
an informal archive of materials which we will make available to the curators, however it does not
guarentee inclusion in the festival. We can suggest that you apply to InLiquid.com and participate
in local arts organizations to create programming. There will be multiple programs around the city
that make up the festival at large, providing opportunities for artists. Philagrafika eagerly promotes
artist members’ print related exhibitions and programs through our member news and will continue to do so.
